    CompTrain Programming

    CompTrain Programming

    by Jeff Perry

“Our understanding is that the needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind. One needs functional competence to stay out of the nursing home. The other one wants functional dominance to win medals.”

—Greg Glassman, CrossFit Founder and CEO

The majority of us fall in the middle of that spectrum but as we age don’t we all want to put off that nursing home as long as possible? Through our CrossFit training we are performing functional fitness across broad modal and time domains at an intensity relative to each individual. The movements we perform in the gym are the core movements of life. Through our constantly varied program each of you then become more prepared for whatever life throws at you. We strive to make your hour in the gym fun, engaging and inclusive of everyone. The result? Dramatic gains in health and fitness along with strong bonds of friendship and community to last a lifetime.

A topic of discussion often revolves around the programming chosen by various CrossFit gyms, including our own. Some write their own programming, which we at Maritime CrossFit did for our first 5+ years of business. Many gyms choose to outsource their programming instead. In January 2018, I made the decision to stop writing our programming and began using the free content provided by CompTrain. In September of 2018, I began paying for the CompTrain Class track. CompTrain is developed out of CrossFit New England which is a leader in the CrossFit community and owned by Ben Bergeron. CompTrain offers various levels to their program from Elite Games competitors to Masters athletes and everyone in between. If you visit the CrossFit New England website you will notice they are performing the same workouts as we are on a daily basis along with countless other CrossFit gyms around the world.

By choosing CompTrain Class as the foundation of our program, we now have experts writing our weekly routines with a proper bias across all three elements of conditioning, strength and gymnastics which are at the core of CrossFit. As stated above, the needs of the Elite and the needs of our Grandparents vary by degree and not by kind. Through CompTrain Class we have a program that is broad and inclusive of every member in the gym regardless of where they fit in that spectrum.

You will notice on most days we post an “Extra” element to our program. This is usually taken from a CompTrain source and provides those with a desire to pursue additional fitness some direction that still fits within our weekly program. For those willing to put in the work and time, our strength floor is open for most classes and this Extra work can be performed on your own before or after classes when the gym is open. If you are looking for even more, the CompTrain Individual track is available online with plenty of additional strength and accessory work to choose from. The workout of the day is usually the same on the Class and Individual tracks.

By following CompTrain Class, we now have a paid program written by specialists. It is designed to fit the needs of the majority within our community while still challenging each of you on your individual journey towards overall health and fitness.

    From the CompTrain Class website…

“CompTrain Class has been designed to provide a 60-Minute CrossFit class to gyms worldwide. Written daily with the class coach in mind, we aim to provide a detailed timeline to optimize every minute of the hour.

Whereas our competitive training programs are geared towards performance in the Open, Regionals, and beyond, CompTrain Class is directed towards the true goal of CrossFit: To improve our quality of life outside the gym. It is not only an effort to lose body fat and maintain lean muscle-mass, but the ability to play pickup basketball with our grandchildren someday. The goal is improving fitness on a slow trajectory towards a distant horizon.”

CompTrain is proven. The results are earned. Enjoy the journey!
